Missing a tax deadline is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make. The IRS and New York State both charge penalties and interest for late filing and late payment. Here is every deadline you need to know for 2025.
January Deadlines
January 15 is the deadline for the fourth quarter 2024 estimated tax payment for both federal and New York State. January 31 is the deadline for employers to distribute W-2 forms to employees and 1099 forms to contractors.
February and March Deadlines
February 18 is the deadline to reclaim exemption from federal withholding if you had no tax liability in the prior year. March 15 is the deadline for S-Corporation and partnership returns on Form 1120-S and Form 1065, as well as the Schedule K-1 distribution deadline.
April Deadlines
April 15 is the most important tax deadline of the year. Individual federal and New York State income tax returns are due. First quarter estimated tax payments are due. IRA and HSA contribution deadlines for the prior tax year also fall on April 15.
June and September Deadlines
June 16 is the deadline for the second quarter estimated tax payment. September 15 is the deadline for the third quarter estimated tax payment, and also the extended deadline for S-Corporation and partnership returns.
October and January Deadlines
October 15 is the extended deadline for individual federal and New York State returns if you filed for an extension in April. January 15 of the following year is the deadline for the fourth quarter estimated tax payment.
Penalties for Missing Deadlines
The IRS charges a failure-to-file penalty of 5% of unpaid taxes per month up to 25%. The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% per month. New York State has similar penalty structures. Filing on time even if you cannot pay in full is always the better choice.
